our homeschool classroom

Our Academic program

In View of Literacy Homeschool Center offers a full-time homeschool tutoring schedule to homeschooled students in the Savannah, GA area. We are a faith-based tutoring center. This means that almost every subject we teach, (with the exception of math) is taught from a biblical perspective and may include a bible-based curriculum or text.

During the academic school year, class times are Tuesday thru Friday, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Tuition rates are $110 weekly. Financial assistance is available for those who need it.

Our classroom serves students in grades 3 – 8.

In our homeschool classroom, we teach math, grammar & writing, history, science and of course… bible. Our bible class is taught with our free bible workbook. Our bible workbook teaches each student the meaning, applications, and defenses of the following scriptures:

  • Psalms 119:9
  • Psalm 119:11
  • Joshua 1:8
  • 2 Timothy 2:15
  • Proverbs 4:23
  • Luke 4:1-13
  • Romans 12:2
  • And much more…

Our homeschool classroom is small, with a maximum capacity of 10 students. The small classroom size is intentional. Our intention is to give each student the individualized academic care, attention, and prayer they need.

Our small size is also effective in training parents how to replicate our academic model and our biblical literacy model in their own homes & schools.

With this in view, we offer virtual coaching for parents and christian educators.

You may sign-up for virtual coaching, HERE.

In our bible summer camp, your student will not only spend time in the scriptures, (through memorizing, meditating, and studying scripture) but they will also complete summer bridge work in both math & reading!

Our summer camp is open to both home-educated and public/private educated students. Our camp is for students in grades 3 – 6.

Our summer camp runs for 5 weeks each summer. Camp is held three days a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The cost of camp is $70 a week.

The curricula we use (During the Academic year) & how we use it

Math:

Curriculum Used: CTC Math (Grades 3-8)

Grammar & Writing:

Curriculum Used: Diana King’s Writing Skills

What We Do: In our homeschool classroom students do not begin learning grammar until they have finished our entire reading curriculum. Once students are proficient readers, they then begin formal grammar lessons. This is a concept that has been adopted by our classroom from the Charlotte Mason Homeschooling Method.

How We Do It: This book series is written directly to the student. So students read the instructions for each assignment and then follow the prompts and/or questions that proceed each lesson. Each book is approximately 138-168 pages in length. So students are only required to complete one page each day.

At the beginning of the school year, the curriculum suggests writing the definitions and examples of each of the “8 Parts of Speech” on index cards for study and review. Three days a week, we review these cards together as a class.

Grading: Each page completed in this workbook is graded. Each week, the pages that were completed during the week are given an average weekly grade. The average weekly grade is recorded weekly in our grade book.

Reading:

Curriculum Used:

What We Do: In our homeschool classroom, students are assigned a specific amount of time to read a grade-leveled-text each day. Grades 3-4 read for 15 minutes each day. Grades 5-6 read for 20 minutes each day, and grades 7-8 read for 25 minutes each day.

During the school year, students are also required to read the bible. However, students set their own daily goal for reading the scriptures. This goal is not a # of minutes goal, as with the leveled-readers, but rather a # of pages goal. Students may choose between 2 – 6 pages a day as their daily offering (goal).

How We Do It: Students are given a simple reading assessment at the beginning of each school year to determine the appropriate leveled-reader to complete for the school year. Meaning, students are not assigned a reader based on their grade level, but on their reading ability.

Grading: Reading is NOT graded in our homeschool classroom.

History:

Curriculum Used:

What We Do: In our homeschool classroom, we alternate history courses each year. For example: One year we will teach American History and then the following year we teach World History. History in our classroom is also taught with a bible-based curriculum and from a biblical perspective.

How We Do It: History in our classroom is taught in a Charlotte Mason inspired way. This means lessons are read aloud to the entire class, followed by group discussions, and finally ending with each student journaling about what they have learned from the day’s reading.

Grading: Grading for history is based upon two factors: (1) Word count (number of sentences) in daily journal responses and (2) participation in class discussions.

Science:

Curriculum Used:

What We Do: In our homeschool classroom, we alternate science courses each year, similar to the way we alternate history courses. For example: One year we will teach Zoology 1, then the following year we teach Zoology 2, and so forth until we have finished all five books listed above for grades 3-6. Science in our classroom is also taught with a bible-based curriculum and from a biblical perspective.

How We Do It: Science in our classroom is taught in a Charlotte Mason inspired way. This means lessons are read aloud to the entire class, followed by group discussions, and finally ending with each student journaling about what they have learned from the day’s reading. Science is done this way for students in grades 3-6.

However, in grades 7-8 students complete their science lessons by reading the material themselves (independently). After reading, students complete activities and worksheets that correspond with the curriculum.

Grading: Grading for grades 3-6 is based upon two factors: (1) Word count (number of sentences) in daily journal responses and (2) participation in class discussions. For grades 7-8, student activities and worksheets are graded and calculated together each week for one weekly grade.
