Our Story
Hi! I’m Katie Larson. I am a homeschooler of more than nine years and a local homeschool tutor in the Savannah, GA area. I am also the founder of In View of Literacy!
In View of Literacy Homeschool Center was founded out of two God-given desires. The first, was to see my nieces and nephews homeschooled. To teach them math, history, and science, away from the anti-God environment of public schools. The second, was to teach my nieces and nephews how to overcome the lusts and temptations that are so prevalent in our present culture, as the Lord had taught me. I wanted my nieces and nephews to be spiritually equipped to live in the world, without being of the world (John 17:14-15).
I wanted to teach them all these things, because years ago, as an unguarded believer, I fell victim to many of the temptations that are prevalent in the world today. Temptations that included pornography, living in immorality, and unwanted & sinful thoughts.
But thanks be to God! The Lord taught me how to overcome all these things!
He taught me to overcome with three simple disciplines from scripture, that most believers have either overlooked, inconsistently practiced, or have practiced in an unbiblical way. So here it is: I overcame these spiritual battles by memorizing, studying, and meditating on the Word of God.
These disciplines of scripture are practices I should have known and practiced since childhood. Because I was actually raised in the church. However, I can honestly say that I was never taught how to memorize, study, or meditate on scripture. Neither was I taught the biblical reasons & spiritual benefits of any of these disciplines.
I never knew that hiding the Word in your heart (memorizing scripture) is a defense against sin (Psalm 119:11), or that the memorized Word could be used as a sword/weapon against temptation, as Jesus demonstrates for us in the scriptures (Luke 4:1-13). I didn’t know that the bible actually commands us to meditate, or that meditating on the Word of God actually comes with the promise that believers will be successful/prosperous in spiritual matters (Joshua 1:8 and Psalms 1:1-3)!
Had I known and practiced these things growing up, I would have guarded my heart from my youth, my mind would have been daily renewed in the Word, and I would have had a defense against temptation. I would have done as the bible says, and “Kept my way pure.” (Psalms 119:9)
But as I have said, I did not know these things. And most young believers in the church today do not know these things either. Making them ill-equipped to stand firm against the constant bombardment of immorality they face each day.
Today, in the church, 36% of church-going teens struggle with pornography. (Read article HERE). While 56% believe it is okay to have sex before marriage and 36% have actually admitted to being sexually active. (Read article HERE).
However, these things should not even be named among believers! (Ephesians 5:3) And the Lord does not leave us defenseless! We have spiritual weapons and armor and protection. Yet, many young believers are living biblically unarmed & illiterate. Unaware that they are in a spiritual battle and unaware of the vast resources in Christ Jesus that are available to them.
But I aim to change this. Through this ministry!
By fulfilling my God-given callings, which is to homeschool academically, and teach spiritual defenses, biblically.
And now, what started as a way to equip my nieces and nephews, has turned into a mission to equip the young believers in my local community and online community!
What We Do
In View of Literacy Homeschool Center is a local non-profit in Savannah, Georgia. It is a faith-based tutoring center that provides full & part-time classes for homeschooled students in the Savannah, GA area.
Each year, in our homeschool classroom, we teach the message of biblical literacy to both students & parents. We teach both parties how to protect & defend their walk with Christ by daily practicing & applying the following scriptures:
- Proverbs 4:23
- Psalm 119:11
- 2 Timothy 2:15
- Joshua 1:8
Our hope is that young believers everywhere will begin to walk in these disciplines of scripture, so they may have a defense against sin, a guard on their hearts, and grow in their salvation…
